Need Bigger Fonts
Never do this if you need bigger font sizes on your display screen

For those of you having the need to set bigger font sizes on your display screen, never do it by the way of "Custom text size (DPI)" as shown below:

Many users who had requested their technical support staff to make fonts bigger via this way is bound for future trouble. By setting a more than 100% custom text size, Windows will not be able to display certain display elements properly and users had reported problem symptoms as follows:

  • Missing [ok] or [submit] buttons
  • Missing minimise, maximise and close buttons at the top right of a window
  • Invisible or "missing" calendar entries in Outlook calendar
  • Unable to scroll to input boxes below the displayed Window

By changing the setting back to "default" at 100%, all the reported problems magically disappeared.

So what should I do if I really need bigger font sizes for easier viewing?

From your Control Panel, find your way to the "Window Color and Appearance" Configuration Window:

Change the font settings of the following window items' font size to 11 or 12:
  • Active Title Bar
  • Icon
  • Menu
  • Message Box

Click [Apply]. That's it.

By applying the above settings, you will find that the wordings on the following items would have increased:

  • icons wordings
  • text on all menubars, pop-up menus, toolbars in Microsoft Office softwares (e.g. Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook)
  • text on Outlook left pane

To increase the font size of your Outlook Inbox View:

Right-click at the "Subject" column and select "Customize Current View".

Click on the button [Other Settings].

Click on the buttons [Column Font], [Row Font] and [Font] respectively and change the font size to 10 (or 11 or 12) point as per your preference. Click [OK] all the way out and you're done.

To increase the font size of your message body text:

Unfortunately, there isn't a setting to adjust the font size on your mail message body text. However, you can dynamically increase the size of the message fonts by holding down the [Ctrl] key and scroll your mouse wheel forwards (away from you).

To dynamically reduce the font size, hold down the [Ctrl] key and scroll your mouse wheel backwards (towards you).
